In her experience as a leadership coach, Melissa believes that anyone can be a leader as long as they are willing to put in the work. “Leadership is about inspiring improvement and bringing out the best in yourself or in the group you are leading.”
After graduating from Lehigh university with a degree in journalism, Melissa started her career journey as a writer and an editor for an online publisher with focused on health and wellness. While there, she began teaching yoga and meditation within the company. As a side hustle, she started leading workshops around mindfulness for leaders and stress management in the corporate setting.
Following her passion for mindfulness, Melissa went on to work at the Chopra Center in which she creates content, develops editorial strategy and manages a team. She also decided to return to school to get certified as a coach and now has a private leadership coaching practice.
Turning a side-hustle into a career
Melissa’s passionate about helping others become more effective and inspiring leaders. She likens the role of a leader to that of a conductor—bringing together the strengths of each musician to create something bigger than the individual.
“Being a leader means bringing everyone to work toward a common cause or common goal and to have that group functioning in a way that is creating something more meaningful than those individuals could ever create on their own and that’s so powerful. ”
She advises leaders to not only be open to feedback, but to seek it out—to surround yourself with people who will tell you the truth. Also, be self-reflective and understand your weaknesses and strengths. “I think the strongest leaders recognize what they don’t know and what they aren’t good at and are able to ask for help when they need to…”
On the podcast, Melissa gives advice to students and young professionals looking to start their leadership journey. “…don’t wait for leadership opportunities to come your way, go and seek them out. The more you practice being a leader the better you’ll be at it, just like anything in life.”
