Rachel Aldrich isn’t afraid to admit she doesn’t have it all figured out. But she’s in a career that she loves. She’s a Marketing Associate at Penguin Random House, the publishing company, where she works on marketing campaigns with authors for their upcoming books.
After graduating from Boston College in 2016, Rachel began her career journey as a finance and technology reporter. But she quickly discovered that churning out articles on Apple stocks didn’t fit with her passion. Find out how Rachel made the career shift from finance journalist to marketing associate.
In the podcast Rachel shares what it felt like to be a recent graduate, and reveals her struggle in finding a job after college. While she had incredible journalism experience under her belt, not to mention leadership experience as an Editor in Chief at College Magazine, after applying to more than a hundred jobs, she never heard any response. She attributes this to not adding a personal touch or leaning on her network.
Fast forward to when Rachel decided to quit her first job, Rachel also shares how this time she reached out to her network. Simply connecting with friends who had jobs she thought were interesting made all the difference. Rachel found that even distant acquaintances were willing to help her out. Learn how you hold informational interviews with people in your network just like Rachel did.
At Penguin Random House Rachel writes ad copy, works on book promotions and creates images to help her authors book launches succeed. If you’ve ever wanted to know what it’s like to be part of the book publishing world, listen in to hear more about Rachel’s day-to-day.
