1. “A gift is the vehicle of love” –John Ruhlin, Founder & Author of Giftology
John drops a big truth bomb about gifting. We’re doing it all wrong, especially in the business world. Forget the ABCs of gifts—anniversaries, birthdays and Christmas—instead give a gift when the timing will surprise and delight. Consider sending a gift to a new connection who gave you five minutes of their time. Or gifting to someone’s assistant to let them know that you appreciate them too. Imagine the impression that will leave. John rethinks the gifting process and helps us see how we can gift more intentionally in order to stand out. He reminds us that we’re wired for reciprocity; “When we pour into people, they want to reciprocate.” But remember, you must gift without strings attached. When you start investing in your relationships, your relationships will flourish.
2. “It’s not the physical body that holds us back, it’s the mindset” –Nick Santonastasso
Are you focusing on the negative that life has thrown your way? Nick, a twenty-three year old, and seriously wise beyond his years, reminds us that this attitude will never serve us. We’re prone to a mindset that says “can’t” instead of “how.” But when we start practicing the latter, our mind will stimulate solutions. Nick is an exceptional example of this very lesson. Born with Hanhart Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder only diagnosed to 11 other people in the world, that has left him without legs and one arm, Nick tackles every life challenge with his winning mindset. Challenges in his life started with how to dress himself as a kid but as he grew up, Nick created even bigger challenges to crush like making his high school wrestling team and become a professional body builder and model. “I’m only winning or learning,” said Nick. How can you start embracing this mentality today? Channel Nick’s winning attitude: Any time something isn’t going your way, ask yourself—“what does this mean?”
3. “If you believe something—it is your reality” –Carey Smolensky, Founder of The Passion Summit & CSP Worldwide
Carey asks us to identify our limiting beliefs. Once we’ve taken the time to clarify what they are exactly, we can then start to face them head on. Ignoring your limiting beliefs only lets them fester, and they will take over. You may not even realize you’ve been harboring limiting beliefs. When you carve out the time to write them down though, there they are, appearing before you. It suddenly becomes clear why you’re not going after what you really want—producing music, moving to New York City, starting your wellness blog, you name it. Whatever it is, your limiting beliefs will hold you back. Identifying them is the first step to changing your reality.
4. “We have all these gifts and talents that we’ve been given” –Cathy Christen, Author of Life As a Masterpiece
Cathy Christen asks us what we want in life—and yes—to write it down. Then she wants us to think about what we need in our environment to achieve these things. For example, we know there are people in our lives who give us energy and those who suck energy from us. Take a minute to write down those people who give you energy and then send them a text to set up a time to chat this week. What a small but meaningful action you can take right now to start creating the environment you need to achieve the life you desire.
5. “Multitasking is a lie” –Naomi Wendorff
I am the worst multitasker and I completely agree with Naomi–it’s a lie. When we can let go of the belief that we should be doing many things at the same time, we’re able to be present and more effective in life. Next time you’re your texting your friend while trying to cook dinner and make your to-do list for tomorrow (who hasn’t been there?), stop a take a pulse check. Is this really sustainable? Absolutely not. Naomi reminds us to pause, reflect and subtract. Yes, actually remove things from that to-do list starting now.
6. “Sometimes we get so wrapped up in our own lives that we forget that we may be shining a light for others.” –Carolyn Colleen, Author of F.I.E.R.C.E
Carolyn Colleen is an advocate for victims of abuse, sharing her message of renewal & FIERCE Empowerment in her book F.I.E.R.C.E. She reminds us to think outside of ourselves, especially when life feels like a struggle. This in itself is a mindset shift. We’re always looking to those that inspire us but who could you be an inspiration for? Who are you already an inspiration for? Acknowledge this very truth. It’s a beautiful one that we forget all too often.
7. “Passion trumps fear” –Karen Putz, Author of Unwrapping Your Passion
Karen is an author, speaker, entrepreneur, and Passion Mentor who helps us unwrap our passions and create a life filled with joy and fulfillment. She shares how we are just one decision away from living a passionate life. What’s that decision exactly? Being willing to suffer to achieve your passion. That’s right—you must push yourself from the limitations you’ve created for yourself. Karen shares her story of being born with limited hearing and then losing her hearing completely from a barefoot skiing accident. She’s learned to never let any self limiting beliefs stand in the way of achieving her passions and I could feel this very energy from Karen as she spoke at The Passion Summit. “You were born with something to contribute to this world and only you can determine what that is.”
8. “The fear is greater than the thing you’re afraid of” –Dr. Richard Shuster, The Daily Helping Podcast
Dr. Shuster has researched what it means to experience and overcome fear. In fact you can actually track your fear. Looking at instances that cause fear, the feelings and thoughts you experience, and the actions you take, will help you better understand your fear. With this in mind, Dr. Shuster wants us to know that we can rewire our approach. And it all starts with the mindset, how we speak to ourselves and the language we surround ourselves with. Our brain is wired to connect to things that are familiar and when we focus on something our brain will get us there. Start by unfollowing the negativity (yes, even negative people on your social media) so you can start focusing on the positive messages.
9. “I have 40 percent control over how I’m feeling today” –Sajel Doshi Bellon, Psychotherapist and Founder of Mind Armour
Did you know you had this much control over your emotions? If you want to show up as the best version of yourself, 40 percent of that is a choice, and it’s up to you–not your genetics and not your past. Sajel helps us realize that we have the power within to dictate how we feel. The key? Discover, nourish and align our strengths to what we want in life. In other words, ask what inspires you. Then uncover your goals and identify your connections, collaborators and champions. We’re not in this life journey alone.
10. “The way you speak to yourself is the way that you speak to the world” –Mark Crandall, Author of Embrace Your Past Win Your Future
Are you telling yourself that you aren’t motivated enough? Or not skilled enough? Start changing the way you speak to yourself by taking action to disprove your thoughts. When you take this approach to extinguishing your limiting beliefs you also show the world who you really are. “People can only think about you what you think about you.” Start deciding what you want that to be exactly.
